Professional Organizers “Clean Sweep” Walcamp
April 14, 2007
In the basement of the Walcamp’s main lodge is a catacomb of rooms. Some of those rooms are filled with bunks. Others are full of craft supplies, file cabinets, sporting equipment, boxed financial records, nurse/medic supplies, kitchen supplies, photos, janitorial supplies, bedding, and the list goes on. Over the years, these rooms have become a catch-all and have come to look like many of our attics and garages – cluttered and disorganized.
But on Saturday, April 14, 2007, the lower level of the Lodge got a makeover! Most of us thought it would not be possible, but with the help of over 20 volunteers, including 12 members of the Chicago chapter of the National Association of Professional Organizers (NAPO) the lower level of the Lodge was organized in a single day.
“Among a number of charities served by volunteer NAPO-Chicago members, Walcamp was especially in need of professional assistance to make the best use of available space in order to continue its programs,” says NAPO board member and event coordinator Jackie Tiani. “The professional organizers came equipped with tools, supplies, containers and shelving units. They applied their talents and skills to give the staff and volunteers a failsafe methodology to sort through all the items, get rid of what was not needed, properly contain items and rearrange the space to make it more efficient.”
The project was made possible through a generous gift form a Friend of Walcamp. The basement has been arranged so that it is useful and practical. Storage rooms have now been designated for specific purposes, like programs, administration, guest services, and games. What used to be “Waldo’s Room” has been transformed into the Program Office. A 12 cubic foot recycling bin was delivered prior to the event, so that our cast-offs do not end up in a land fill. Walcamp has now officially implemented a recycling program.
“It was a big project, and I couldn’t imagine tackling it on our own,” says Deon Hull of Walcamp Outdoor Ministries. “I feel that we can now move forward after organizing the past.”
Thank you, NAPO, and to all the volunteers who helped to make the “Walcamp Clean Sweep” day a huge success!
