Life Skills

These 90 minute lessons focus on outdoor skills, history and working as a team.

Group Building: Students play non-competitive games to get them warmed up, talk about a full value contract to work together and then do activities to get them to communicate and work productively with their group.

GIC (Group Initiative Course): This course is used as an effective team-building activity that can put students in a positive state of mind not only for the day but for the week. A minimum of four (4) hours required for this course. There is an additional charge of $8 per participant for this unit.

Pioneer Life: Students will learn about life as a settler in the 1840. They will work on packing lists for their big move, learn about pioneer tools and have an opportunity to try to use them. Students will learn about transportation and cooking without automobiles or electricity.

Kingston History/Cemetery: The students will get the chance to learn about how Kingston was established. The students will go out to the Kingston cemetery and learn more about earlier times through studying the grave sites.

Outdoor Measurements: Students learn how to use their bodies to measure out distances. They will map and compare those measurements with the rest of the class.

Arts & Crafts: This is a chance for the students to get a little creative and have a great time doing it. The crafts are fun for all ages and for boys and girls.

Servant Events: This is an opportunity for the students to take ownership in Walcamp. A group can choose to do brief Servanthood each day (sweeping, raking, firewood collection), a session-long project, or choose to find sponsorship and take on a larger project (planting, small construction projects, etc.). Thrivent may be able to help with food and material cost if you do a project.

Cross Country Skiing: This allows the students to use hand, eye and foot coordination skills while having fun. Snow permitting, they will be able to try this on our large open field. Snow required.

Survival Techniques: Survival is important for everyone to know and understand. This class teaches basic skills in building a shelter, making a fire, finding water and what to do if they ever get lost in the woods.

Outdoor Cooking: Students will cook their own lunch on an open fire. They will learn how to build a fire, cooperate with one another to prepare the meal and clean up the dishes.

Archery: A seasonal elective that allows students to try their skills as an archer. After instruction by our staff, students will have several tries at hitting the “bull’s-eye” on our archery range. Walcamp-trained instructor required.

Orienteering: This class is designed to give students an introductory course on what a compass is, what makes it work, as well as how to use it. The students will then exercise their knowledge as they use their compass to find different locations throughout camp.

Fishing: A seasonal elective that lets the students see how easy, or hard, it is to catch a fish. They will get the chance to try their hand at some basic bamboo-style fishing at our lake.

Canoeing: Students will learn how canoes were used as a means of transportation and the history of them. Then they will get the chance to go out on Walcamp’s lake and try their hand at it. You do have the option of just canoeing with out instruction. Walcamp lifeguard is required

Frisbee Golf: They are playing golf, but instead of golf balls and clubs they use their hands and Frisbees. The students will use their eye-hand coordination to throw the Frisbee towards a certain object and see how many times it takes to get there. Ultimate Frisbee is also available, teaching students eye-hand coordination, quick thinking and working as a team.

Field Games: An assortment of short, active, fun-filled games. Played outside when possible, though if the weather changes many can also be used as indoor activities.
