Outdoor Education - Homeschool
Homeschool Days - General Info
Purpose
Homeschool Days events extend the Walcamp outdoor education program to families and co-op groups,
providing opportunities to explore God’s creation, build friendships with fellow homeschool families, and for personal growth through educational and recreational activities.
Schedule
Walcamp typically schedules between 6-8 Homeschool Days Events during the traditional school year. Both half-day and full day programming options are available.
Activities
Each Homeschool Days event focuses on a specific theme, with activities based in at least one of three general areas. Activities are designed to provide as much hands-on exploration as possible.
| Environmental Education | Outdoor Skills Development | Social and Community Studies |
- Nature Hikes |
- Hands on tools and artifacts |
- Group games |
Actual programming may vary between events. Programming costs may vary by activity and group size.
Staff & Supervision
Events are hosted by the Outdoor Ed. program staff, fluent in a wide range of interests and abilities, and experienced in working with student groups. A lifeguard is on duty for all waterfront activities. All events are supervised by the OE Program specialist, who is certified by the Red Cross in First Aid/CPR.
Parents are encouraged to attend with their students. Walcamp staff can provide supervision if adult participation is not possible, however parental attendance (or designated adult(s) from multiple families) is required for any participants in 3rd grade or younger. Parents and siblings under 5 years of age attend free -unless specifically mentioned otherwise.
Walcamp is accredited by the American Camping Association.
History
Walcamp has run Outdoor Education programing for Christian schools since its establishment in 1963, and in 2006 our staff began monthly Homeschool Days events as a means to provide a similar experience to homeschool families. Changes in staff and low participation levels caused a period of irregularly scheduled events, and in 2010 Walcamp began re-evaluating the program, standardizing programs and exploring ideas for targeting homeschool co-op groups in addition to 'word-of-mouth' advertising, and hopes in the future to begin scheduling day events for specific co-op groups in addition to the monthly Homeschool Days events.
