Why do Outdoor Education?

Outdoor education gives students the opportunity to learn a positive attitude towards the outdoor environment and change their attitude and fears through first hand experiences. The experience can also help students learn about one another in a safe, healthy atmosphere. Students have the opportunity to grow as a community, teaching and sharing what they have learned with one another. There is no way to duplicate the extent of this experience in a classroom.

At Walcamp we teach with our heart and our head. We not only teach about canoeing and animals in the pond, but we teach about Jesus in our everyday life. Devotions are an essential part of our daily example as well as living each second as Jesus would have us do. We teach sharing on the Group Initiatives Course, and also in Archery and during the weather unit. Students can learn about responsibility as they help with dinning hall set up and clean up. At Walcamp they learn about being part of a Christian community.

The curriculum and teachers at Walcamp are of the highest caliber. Lessons and units are designed by professional educators and taught by well trained staff. Lessons are designed to include hands on activities. Students learn better when they are doing, so we let them. They touch and smell and feel throughout the activities. Most lessons include a short instructional time followed by most of the period being spent in exploration and discovery.

Programs are offered year round with lessons adapting to the changing weather. The Survival lesson in the summer is much different than when it is snowing but both are excellent lessons for the students. Scheduling is limited to housing and staff availability, so please make your plans as far in the future as possible (many schools book 1 year out). Please call 815.784.5141 or email Deb, debra@walcamp.org for information or registration information.
